Lot Essay
The colourful mosaic-marble top is bordered by reed-gadroons, and supported on an antique-fluted pillar, while addorsed 'Nike' or winged victories perch on the voluted trusses of its altar-tripod 'claw', which displays fruit-garlanded satyr masks. The drawing-room table is richly carved in the mid-19th century antique or Renaissance fashion and relates to the Duchess of Sutherland's table, with addorsed storks, executed by the Bond Street firm of George Morant & Son and exhibited at the 1851 Exhibition (J. Gloag, Republication of the Art Journal - Special Issue of the Illustrated Catalogue, New York, 1970, p. 34).
