With dentilled broken pediment above a dotted lozenge-patterned frieze and a pair of panelled doors with blind geometric glazing bars enclosing two columns of four adjustable shelves with alphabet metal labels, flanked on each side by a conforming shorter door enclosing four adjustable shelves with labels, the lower section with a pair of doors enclosing a shelf flanked on each side by a conforming door enclosing a shelf, on a plinth base

Lot Essay

The temple-pedimented cabinet has mosaiced trellised doors with octagon compartments inspired by Apollo's temple at Palmyra (R. Woods, Ruins of the Temple of the Sun at Palmyra, 1753). This glazing pattern featured in a 'Pediment Bookcase' design issued by Robert Sayer in A Society of Upholsterers, Cabinet-Makers etc., Household Furniture in Genteel Taste, pt. II, 1760, pl. 57. The pattern for the 'commode' doors also featured in this publication (pl. 68).
