With its marble top, Grecian-stepped plinth raised on griffin paws, and 'Louis Quatorze' foliate decoration, it relates to 'Pier Commodes' in the French/antique fashion as popularised by George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808. The façades fretted 'Chinese tablets', appropriate for china display, reflect the contemporary whimsical taste adopted at the Marine Pavilion, Brighton by George, Prince of Wales, later George IV.
