Lot Essay

"In 1948, the Duke of Windsor placed an order for a panther brooch as a present for the Duchess. It consisted of a cabochon emerald of 116.74 carats on which there was an outstretched golden panther flecked with black. This was the firm's first fully three-dimensional treatment of the motif."

H. Nadelhoffer, Cartier Jewelers Extraordinary, Thames and Hudson, 1984, p. 230
