L'opera si lega alle tele di Pompeo Batoni firmate e datate 1745 in Ungheria, Abbazia di Pannonhalma, delle quali sono repliche autografe gli esemplari già del conte Merenda di Forlì, ora a Montreal, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (cf. A.M. Clark, Pompeo Batoni, A Complete Catalogue of his Works, Oxford, 1985, p. 235, no. 92-95).
Il soggetto del pendant raffigurante 'La Verità e la Misericordia' e 'La Giustizia e la Pace' è tratto dal Salmo 85, 8-10.
