Fratello di Andries Both, Jan fu uno dei più importanti pittori olandesi italianizzanti. Durante il suo soggiorno in Italia si specializzò in scene di genere e solo dopo il suo rientro in patria si dedicò all'esecuzione di paesaggi boschivi, descritti accuratamente nel fogliame e negli alberi e illuminati da una luce dorata crepuscolare.
