Lot Essay

Such exceptionally fine carved jade figures of camels are very rare. Most of the known examples from the Song and Yuan dynasties are represented without harness and saddle-cloth. The russet and pale celadon nephrite material of the present figure is typical of those used to carve the Song-Ming animals.
For other fine examples of jade camels, refer to the Gerald Godfrey Collection, sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 30 October 1995, Lot 867 ; or the yellow jade camel dated Tang and published in Ip Yee, Chinese Jade Carving, Hong Kong 1983, p.138, pl.128.
A jade animal with similar strong and naturalistic carving, dated Song, is illustrated in Jadeware (II), The Complete Collection of Treasures of The Palace Museum, Hong Kong 1995, p.68, pl.58.
A jade horse with a similar fine carving is published in Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong 1996, p.146, pl.126.
