Carefree branches as if painted by Ni Zan,
From which its personality is revealed.
Shadows as if of a phoenix set against the scales of a dragon,
This should not be viewed together with any flowers

[Its] shape is a crouching dragon.
Should it choose to make an acquaintence,
Perhaps it will reveal its heritage
