Lot Essay

Such vessels are quite rare. Our guess is that the one with four spouts might have contained charcoal, while the other one, placed on the top of the first vessel, was filled with water. That would keep the water warm. It would then be possible to place an inkstone on the top of the vessel containing water and this would keep the ink from freezing in winter without being so hot as to make it evaporate.
