Having gained the grand prize in painting in Porto, he came to Paris and became a pupil on Cabanel, Dagnan-Bouveret and Bastien-Lepage. His awards were widespread and of the top level. He Gained a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889, was made Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1895, then Officier, Membre de Jury and Hors Concours in 1900.he was a Member of the Academy of fine arts in Lisbon and Commander of Santiago. His work focused on rural peasant life which was a particularly popular genre in the latter half of the 19th Century. With his perennial successes at the Salon, his works were widely reproduced as prints. His works have been conserved at the museum of contemporary art in Lisbon, in the Orsay in Paris, and in museums in Porto, Amiens, Nice and Parma.
