Lot Essay

He studied painting and design at Lille, then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Cabanel. He was awarded the prize of Rome in 1875 and travelled in Italy before discovering the Orient which inspired many aspects of his works. His work in France of theatre portraits does much to provide a memory of the time he lived in. he decorated the hotels and theatres of Paris with grand romantic murals. His works can be found at museums in Béziers, Caen, Lille, Marsaille and Sydney.
