3 volumes, small 8o (186 x 112 mm). 19 engraved plates only (of 20). (Lacking one plate from volume II and three half-titles.) Contemporary French red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with outer border of gilt fillets and a roll-tool, inner panel tooled in blind, the flat spines in six compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in the second and fifth, the others with decorative tooling in gilt and blind, gilt turn-ins, brown watered silk pastedowns and endleaves, gilt edges (light scuffing to extremities). Provenance: de Lannoy (early armorial bookplate); A. & R. le conte Boudeville (bookplate).
A FINELY-BOUND SET OF A WORK FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1786. The present edition was apparently limited to 500 copies and is very rare at auction: no copies, complete or incomplete, are listed as having sold in the past twenty five years. Kearney The Private Case p.87; Pia Les Livres de l'Enfer 333.
