Portrait frontispiece of Voltaire by Cathelin after de la Tour, title vignettes, 13 headpieces, 57 plates by Baquoy, Châtelin, Deny and others after Charles Monnet, Marillier, Martini, Monnet and Moreau, extra-illustrated with 33 plates after Moreau and 8 after Desenne. (The 4pp. "Avis au Relieur" misbound at the back of vol.I, rather than vol.III.) Mid-19th century red straight-grained morocco, covers panelled in gilt with fleuron cornerpieces, spines in six compartments with raised bands, the second compartment lettered in gilt, the third with volume number, the others with repeat decoration of double-fillet panelling surrounding a large centrally-placed fleuron tool, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: P. Desq (armorial booklabel in vol.I, sale L. Potier, Paris, 25 April - 1 May 1866, lot 724, sold 55Ff); A. & R. le conte Boudenville (bookplate).

A FINE SET WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE, illustrated with some of Monnet's best work: "His designs for Candide are the best contemporary illustrations for this masterpiece" (Ray). The additional plates after Moreau le Jeune are the complete suite of illustrations to Voltaire's Contes... from Moreau's Deuxième suite des figures... published in Paris in 1819-1825 [cf. Cohen-de Ricci 1047; cf. Ray French 58]. It is interesting to note that the 1866 auction catalogue records the presence of the two additional suites of plates. Cohen-de Ricci 1038-1039; Ray French 35. (3)
