CROCE, Giovanni Andrea dalla (1514-1575). Chirurgiae universalis opus. Venice: Roberto Meietti 1596.

2o ( 348 x 225 mm). Title printed in red and black, with Meietti's cockerel device on title-page, numerous woodcut illustrations and almost 500 illustrations of surgical instruments (some marginal worming, light dampstaining at end). Later vellum (rebacked).

FIRST EDITION of the complete Latin text. Little is known about the Venetian surgeon Croce. His work on surgery, first published in 1573, was mainly a compilation of important authorities from Hippocrates to Abulcasis, and is distinguished by the surprisingly modern recommendations for wound management and a high quality of illustration over several editions. The appended "Officina chirurgica" includes apart from the almost 500 illustrations of surgical instruments five scenes of operations performed in the home or on the battlefield. "The blocks brought together by Meietti in the 'Officina' are those cut for Ziletti and used throughout the text in 1573" (Mortimer). Adams C-2993; Mortimer Italian 142; NLM/Durling 1083; Waller 2275; Wellcome I, 1667.
