ELIZA GARDINER'S COPY. The manuscript annotations on the preliminary pages not only record the chain of ownership, but note the marriages, births, baptisms and deaths in several generations of English and American colonial families: the Wickers and Crannes of London, the Diodate and Johnson families. The Rev. Stephen Johnson writes: "My dear wife Elizabeth Johnson departed this Life Leaving us in Sorrow & tears, this 2d of May 1761 at five o'clock in the morning." It passed to the Griswold family and after John Griswold's death "it was purchased by John L. Gardiner, Esq., proprieter of Gardiner's Island who married the 3d daughter after his death." The final notation on the title page reads: "John Lyon Gardiner departed this life Nov. 22 1816 aged 46 years & 14 days."
