A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM GENERAL JACKSON TO THE NAVY SECRETARY. Here Jackson complies with the request of one of the army doctors in his command, and makes a recommendation to the rival service: "Doctor Harney of the Army has requested my aid to procure an appointment in the Navy for his youngest brother W. S. Haney: he gives him a very flattering recommendation; although his brother, my confidence in Doctor H. induces a conviction that he has spoken the truth, from which, I am confident, nothing would induce him to swerve" [WITH:] JACKSON. Autograph endorsement signed ("A. J.") as President, 22 October 1836, on verso of 22 October 1836 letter from N. Towson to C. A. Harris, Acting Secretary of War, urging the appointment of a replacement to succeed the resigning paymaster.
