LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln"), 28 February 1865. Oblong, 2½ x 3¼, clipped from a larger sheet, mounted on a 4to sheet. LINCOLN AUTHORIZES PAROLE FOR SOME REBEL SOLDIERS. Lincoln's endorsement reads: "Allow these men to take the oath of Dec. 8 1863 & be discharged." The President's generous Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction granted a full pardon to rebels willing to swear that they would "support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States," and would obey all acts of Congress or the President respecting slavery. Only high-ranking Confederate officials were excluded from this parole.
