MONROE, James (1758-1831), President. Letter signed ("Jas Monroe") as Secretary of State to David Gelston, Collector of the Customs, New York; Dept. of State [Washington], 12 March 1815. 2 pages, 4to. The Secretary of State gives instructions concerning "packets addressed to Mr. Beasley;" requesting that if Gelston has "an immediate opportunity of sending them to a Port in France not very distant from Paris, I would ask you...to take off the covers addressed to Mr. Beasley and forward the Packets to the American Minister of that Place taking care to instruct the Person in whose charge you place them, to deliver them to the American Consul at the Port where he may arrive or to forward them to Paris by a conveyance less expensive than the mail" -- BURR, Aaron. Autograph letter signed AS VICE PRESIDENT to David Gelston in New York; Washington, 12 February 1803. 1 full page, 4to, integral address leaf. Asking Gelston to "forward the enclosed" [not present], and directing him to pay M.L. Davis $1500 for "B. Livingston on my bond...We are in negotiation on the question of am[oun]t. On each side it is supposed that there have been errors in former settlements...I propose to discharge the balance on my return to New York..." He reports that "the repeal of the Bankrupt law is on its third reading in Senate. The probability is that it will pass...Nothing new from [New] Orleans, nor expected these ten days." Burr's letters as Vice-President are much rarer than his early and later letters. -- Four small manuscript documents, 1788-1800, each 2 x 4 in. approx. Tax receipts. (6)
