NEWMAN, John Henry (1801-1890). Autograph quotation signed ("John H. Newman"), "Lead Kindly Light," 18 February 1871. 1 page, 8vo, tipped onto another leaf and bound in a red calf binding, with Newman's crest stamped on upper cover, ribbed spine, all edges gilt, in a red cloth box. THE LINES THAT BECAME THE UNOFFICIAL ANTHEM OF THE EVANGELICAL OXFORD MOVEMENT within the Church of England: "Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom lead thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home Lead thou me on! Keep thou my feet, I do not ask to see The distant scene - one step enough for me." Newman originally wrote these lines some 40 years before, on the Straits of Bonafacio, in a state of spiritual unease and while recovering from a fever. Newman always regarded this Mediterranean journey as a crucial turning point in his life, one that led eventually to his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1846 and the creation of his great theological and philosophical works, Apologia, and The Idea of a University.
