Five years into his 17-year career in the House of Representatives, Garfield writes a [$50] check to himself against his House bank account. He enjoys a unique distinction in his legal career: the first lawyer to argue his first courtroom case in the U. S. Supreme Court, pleading the cause of Lambdin P. Milligan in the landmark Ex parte Milligan (1866). -- ARTHUR, Chester A. (1829-1886). Partly printed check signed ("C. A.
