Lutheran Church for [$50.00]. -- GARFIELD, James A. (1831-1881). Partly printed check accomplished and signed ("J. A. Garfield"), Washington, 11 January 1868. 1 p., oblong (3 3/8 x 7¾), decorative cartouches at left. Five years into his 17-year career in the House of Representatives, Garfield writes a [$50] check to himself against his House bank account. He enjoys a unique distinction in his legal career: the first lawyer to argue his first courtroom case in the U. S. Supreme Court, pleading the cause of Lambdin P. Milligan in the landmark Ex parte Milligan (1866). -- ARTHUR, Chester A. (1829-1886). Partly printed check signed ("C. A. Arthur"), New York, 25 December 1872. 1 p., oblong (2¾ x 7 3/8), decorative types, advertisement along left edge ("Cor.
