JOHNSON, Andrew (1808-1875). Partly printed check, accomplished and signed ("Andrew Johnson") AS PRESIDENT, drawn on the First National Bank of Washington; Washington, D.C., 26 January 1866. 1 page, oblong (3 3/8 x 8 1/8 in.), nearly invisible slit cancellation, attractively printed in decorative types, large wood-engraved illustration of the imposing stone facade of the bank (labeled "Government Depository and Financial Agent of the United States"), small tax stamp at upper right-hand corner.
JOHNSON'S CHECKS ARE EXCEEDINGLY RARE. President Johnson writes a check to "self" for [$200.00], early in the same eventful year that saw the enactment of key Reconstruction legislation including the Civil Rights Act, the Freedman's Bureau Act, and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing due process and equal protection (preventing states from discriminating in the application of the law). The impeachment crisis would erupt almost exactly a year later after Johnson's summary dismissal of Secretary of War Stanton.
