These commissions span Green's distinguished 30-year career, starting as a Lieutenant in 1837. Pierce made him a Commander in 1855, the rank at which he made his mark in the Civil War, destroying or sinking numerous Confederate prize ships off the coasts of the Carolinas and Florida.
