JACKSON, Andrew. Document signed ("Andrew Jackson"), 21 March 1834. 1 page, folio (13¾ x 16½ in.), with decorative paper seal of the Navy Department, COUNTER-SIGNED BY SECRETARY OF THE NAVY LEVI WOODBURY. Jackson appoints John Laighton to a four-year term as Navy Agent for the port of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, commencing 27 April 1834. Laighton is to "carefully and diligently" discharge his duties and "to observe and follow the orders and directions which he may from time to time receive from the President of the United States and the Secretary of the Navy." Naval appointments of this period are uncommon, reflecting the modest size of the Navy after the War of 1812.
