A George III silver teapot and stand
Mark of Hester Bateman, London, the teapot, 1785, the stand, 1787
The teapot, oval, with beaded borders, straight spout and part-wood scroll handle, the hinged slightly domed cover with part-wood finial, the body and cover with bands of pellets and patere, with two ribbon-tied oval cartouches within floral mantling, the stand, oval and on four ball-and-claw feet, with beaded border, similarly decorated with bright-cut engraving, the teapot engraved with a coat-of-arms and two crests, the stand with a coat-of-arms, the stand later engraved on underside with initials, the teapot, marked on base and cover, the stand, marked on base
The teapot, 5¼in. (13.3cm.) high; the stand, 7in. (17.8cm.) long
gross 15oz. (494gr.)
The crests are those of Blake and Jex.
The arms are those of Blake for William Blake (1758-1842) of The Hall, Swanton Abbots and Scottow, Norfolk, who married on 21 December 1785. His grandfather, Thomas Blake (1689-1735) had married Elizabeth, daughter and heir in her issue of John Jex. William Blake later inherited the Jex property from his uncle, also William Blake, in 1800. (2)
