A George II silver snuffbox
Circa 1730, unmarked
Oblong and with flat hinged cover, the base and cover with foliage borders, the base engraved with 'HP' cypher, the cover with a coat-of-arms with husk, scroll and foliage cartouche, the side later engraved with presentation inscription

The arms are those of Pye, possibly for Henry Pye Esq. (1683-1748) of Farringdon, Berkshire. Henry Pye married three times. His first marriage in 1708 to Jane, daughter of Sir Nathaniel Curzon 2nd Bt. (1635-1718), was without surviving issue. However, his second marriage to Anne, only daughter of Sir Benjamin Bathurst (d.1704) produced seven sons and six daughters. His third marriage, to Miss Isabella Warren was childless.
