Lot Essay

The use of unusual veneers in this striking bois de bout technique, more often called ronce d'olivier, is characteristic of the oeuvre of the celebrated Hache dynasty of cabinet-makers, established in Grenoble since the end of the 17th century. For more examples of this technique see R. Fonvieille, La Dynastie des Hache, Grenoble, 1974, p.108.

A related cylinder bureau with this technique, stamped by the Tyrolean cabinet-maker Jean-Philippe Feurstein working for Christophe-André Hache, was sold at Christie's New York, 23 October 1998, lot 131.
