A VICTORIAN SILVER PRESENTATION TROWEL
MARK OF DANIEL AND JOHN WELLBY, LONDON, 1895
The triangular blade with detachable part-ivory handle banded in silver and engraved with a coat-of-arms, and with parcel-gilt cast earl's coronet finial and foliate terminal, the blade chased with a broad border of foliage on a partly-matted ground, the centre engraved with a coat-of-arms with earl's coronet above and a presentation inscription, the reverse engraved with a list of committee names, marked on blade and band of handle, in a lined and fitted case with label 'D. & J. Wellby Garrick Street, London'

The inscription on the front of the blade reads, 'Presented to the Right Hon. The Earl of Strafford on his laying the foundation stone of the Idiot Annexe in connection with the Middlesex County Asylum, October 12th 1895.'
The arms on the handle are those of the County of Middlesex
The arms on the blade are those of Byng for Henry, 4th Earl of Strafford K.C.V.O. (1831-1899)
