The fashion for this type of jewelled and ormolu-mounted cut-glass vase was widespread throughout Paris and Northern Europe in the early 19th century. Interestingly related examples, described as being of 'Russian Stone', were designed and produced under the direction of I.A. Ivanov, director of the Imperial glass works in St Petersburg from 1815-1848; this includes an example in the Hermitage ('St.

A closely related pair of vases was sold anonymously at Christie's New York, 29 September 1999, lot 363.
