UGHI, LUDOVICO AND LUDOVICO FURLANETTO, DATED 1729 BUT CIRCA 1779
The title set in a decorated baroque cartouche, compass rose with inset four inset wind heads and sixteen inset cardinal points, decorated scalebar surmounted by the arms of Doge Aloysio Mocenico, epigram in scrolled cartouche supported by a putto, and allegory of Venice triumphant, sitting on the lion of St Mark and surrounded by Putti, sea gods, and tritons, edges slightly browned.
Wall map of Venice printed from eight engraved copperplates on eight single Royal sheets approx. 730 x 510 mm.(engraving 638 x 448 mm.) and upper and lower banners and text printed from four engraved copperplates on three single Royal sheets approx. 500 x 730 mm. (engraving 200 X 590 mm. and larger) as issued, deckle edges.
A fine copy of the second state of this important plan of Venice. According to Schultz, Furlanetto acquired the plates sometime before 1779. By 1779 they were listed as part of his stock in a application for a blanket privilege on his entire production. The second state differs from the first in two respects only: the first state was etched and bears the imprint 'apresso giuseppe baroni á s. Giuliano'. Nothing is known of the etcher of the first state, whilst Baroni was prominent for founding, the six other Venetian printmakers, a guild of incisori churches, the hospitals, public transport, as well as information about features of artistic and architectural interest.
