A GEORGE III SILVER TEAPOT AND STAND
MARK OF PETER AND JONATHAN BATEMAN, LONDON, 1790
The teapot of shaped lozenge-form, with part-wood scroll handle and straight spout, the hinged slightly domed oval cover with part-wood finial, the body and cover bright-cut engraved with stylized foliate garlands, the sides each with a cartouche, one enclosing two later engraved crests and motto with earl's coronet above, marked on base and cover, the conforming stand on four fluted bracket feet, with moulded border, similarly decorated and engraved, marked on reverse
The teapot - 6 in. (15.2 cm.) high; the stand - 7¼ in. (18.5 cm.) long
gross 18 oz. (569 gr.)
The crests are those of Byng, for John, 1st Earl Strafford G.C.B (1772-1860) (2)

Lot Essay

Jonathan Bateman was the third son of Hester Bateman. His first mark, entered in partnership with his brother Peter, was registered at Goldsmiths' Hall on 7 December 1790. Jonathan died on April 19, 1791, and work bearing his mark is extremely scarce.
