CALCUTTA SCHOOL

An album of botanical studies of Indian plants, pencil, watercolour and bodycolour. [Calcutta: last quarter of 18th century]

Folio (420x275 mm) 118 watercolour drawings on paper, one folding, each annotated at upper left in Hindi and Arabic, a few with English text below describing Linnaeus's classification, the English common name, the Hindi form, and the Arabic name, others with pencil annotations of the common English name. Some light soiling and staining to a few margins, principally in the early leaves. 20th Century blue cloth spine lettered in gilt 'Botanical Drawings'.

An attractive album of Indian botanical plants probably drawn up in Calcutta in the latter part of the 18th Century for a English client. The incorporation of the Hindu and Arabic terms of the plants is particularily interesting and shows that the album was put together by someone knowledgeable of Indian plants. The album includes drawings of polygoniums, convolvolus, mimosa, bamboo, and solanums.
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
