Lot Essay

See F. Slitine, Samson, génie de l'imitation, Paris, 2002, p. 109 for a biscuit bust of Madame Du Barry by Samson after the original portrait by Augustin Pajou, the same head as that found on the present example; also p. 106 for the crossed S mark which at first glance resembles the interlaced L's mark of the Sèvres factory.
