Lot Essay

This marble temple model is inspired by the works of Luigi Valadier (1726 - 1785), part of the celebrated Roman dynasty of goldsmiths and founders that engaged in a multitude of artistic activities. Luigi received numerous commissions from the Vatican and high nobility of Rome, and this model is clearly inspired by such works as a model of a temple in the collection of Lord Rothschild, illustrated in Valadier: Three Generations of Roman Goldsmiths, London, 1991, pp. 146-147, no. 76 and the model after the Temple of Flora in the Palacio Reale, Madrid, illustrated in A. González-Palacios, ed. L'Oro di Valadier, Rome, 1997, p. 22.
