G.-W. Nowell-Usticke, in his seminal work Rembrandt's Etchings, (Livingston Publishing Co., Narberth, PA., 1967) quotes a hand bill advertising the sale of impressions of Rembrandt's most famous print, printed from the plate re-touched by Captain William Baillie in 1775. In ascending order of price are impressions on French paper, Indian paper, and finally 'finest Japan or satin', at 5/5/0 each. Also advertised are impressions from fragments of the composition, Baillie having cut the plate into three sections apparently to assuage collectors' fears that impressions might become 'too common'.
