Untitled is a brilliant example of the artist's work. Using found objects of Chinese origin, Chen Zhen asks the viewer to immerse himself or herself into his world, a world in which humour and science, in particular medicine, collide with the mythologies of the East and West.
"Health relies in the end on a balancing act, inner peace and universal compassion. It requires individual and social meditation; a 'therapeutic meditation' a 'cleansing' of the mind and body..." (Chen Zhen quoted in Chen Zhen: Silence Sonore, Palais de Tokyo, Paris 2003).
Chen Zhen moved to Paris in 1986. This emigration to Europe was perhaps the greatest influence on the art of Chen Zhen as he ceased painting so he could concentrate on mixed media installation. He struggled to find the spirituality of the old China, which he thought had been suppressed under Communism and the Cultural Revolution, and the move to Paris enabled him to express his ideas and thoughts. However, he became increasingly concerned about the socio-economic discrepancies between the first, second and third worlds. As a result of his concerns, he spent a great deal of time travelling and working with various communities in Africa, South America and southern Asia. In Untitled, the decay of the found objects comes to signify the decay of the human race. At the time of his premature death, caused by a rare medical condition, Chen Zhen was planning to train as a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, a profession which combined his own interests in health with his desire to heal the world physically, mentally and spiritually.
