ARCHDALE, John (ca 1642-ca 1717). A New Description of that Fertile and Pleasant Province of Carolina: with a Brief Account of its Discovery, Settling, and the Government Thereof of this Time. With several Remarkable Passages of Divine Providence during my Time. London: John Wyat, 1707.

FIRST EDITION. Archdale was governor of Carolina from 1695 to 1697, sent to the colony during a period of great internal turmoil. He was a prudent and moderate leader, known for his ability to manage the needs of both the European settlers and the natives. Under his administration, Archdale made a number of improvements to the province, such as establishing regulations relating to prices and rent. Rice culture was introduced to Carolina by Archdale after he gave some friends a bag of rice he had received from the captain of a ship from Madagascar. Formerly a member of the Society of Friends, Archdale exempted all Friends from service in the province's militia (imposed on all other citizens). His moderation helped quell arguments between colonists and their feudal sovereigns, and the establishment of a special board for deciding contests between colonists and Indians helped him receive the respect of the latter.
