[LAMBART, Richard (ca 1722-1778), Sixth Earl of Cavan]. A New System of Military Discipline, Founded Upon Principle By a General Officer. Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by R. Aitken, 1776.
8o (192 x 120 mm). Woodcut monogram device of Aitken on title, woodcut diagrams of troop movements. (Some browning, title with minor dampstains.) Contemporary speckled calf (neatly rebacked). Provenance: Signature on A2r of "W. Montgomery," probably William Montgomery (1736-1816), Pennsylvania judge.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Probably chosen for reprinting by Aitken in response to the conflict with Great Britain, in recognition of the pressing need for Continental and militia officers to learn the basics of military science. Lambert's treatise offers detailed instructions for both parade and field exercise, outlining the specific duties of each rank and includes an appendix containing "Rules, Maxims and Observations for the Conduct and Discipline of an Army." Evans 14815; Spaulding & Karpinski 321.
