"FAIR": the prediction for July 4, 1776. Low opens his 1776 almanac with a 2½ page address to the soldiers of the American Army. "The time is at length arrived in which we are reduced to the sad alternative of defending the most sacred and inestimable of all our enjoyments from utter ruin, and ourselves from the grave of political thraldom, by dint of sword; or yield them to the will of a banditti of tyrants more implacable than the savages of the wilderness, who behold things only through the dark veil of uncultivated nature" (p. [2]). On p. [6] is an account of the commencement of hostilities between Great Britain and America by Rev. William Gordon. A list of roads to the principal towns and taverns and inns along them is included. Church 1121 ("It is of special interest because it contains a contemporary Account of the Commencement of Hostilities, written by the Reverend William Gordon, an Englishman settled at Roxbury, which he drew up on the 17th of May for the patriots"); Drake 3252; Evans 14168.
