FIRST EDITION, relating to the claim of James Johnson (1774-1826) for transportation of troops on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. A contract was entered between the U.S. and Johnson in 1818 giving him rights to navigate two steam boats on the Mississippi. By 1821, it was felt that the rate of transportation was not definitely settled and agreed. Johnson's role in the fur trade is discussed in Chittendon's history (see below), vol. 2, pp. 568-69.
