[TEXAN SANTA FE EXPEDITION]. CONDE, Francisco García, Governor of Chihuahua. Viva La Independencia. El Exmo. Sr. Gobernador y Commandante general, acaba de recebir por extraordinario, el siguente parte... Chihuahua: Imprenta del Gobierno á cargo de Cayetano Ramos, [prior to 8 October] 1841.
Broadside 2o (310 x 209 mm). Heading in decorative type, text in one column, imprint at bottom. Unbound, deckle edges preserved; quarter morocco slipcase. A very fine copy in original state. Provenance: The Eberstadt copy, reportedly.
"PERHAPS THE FIRST SEPARATE ACCOUNT IN PRINT OF THE CAPTURE OF THE VANGUARD OF THE TEXAN SANTA FE EXPEDITION" (Streeter). The text of this very rare broadside is a factual account of Governor Manual Almijo's capture of the Texan overland expedition, dated 28 September, from Jose Maria Elias Gonzalez, Commandante of Villa del Paso. The initial news had been given to Gonzalez by Captain D. Pablo Zalazar of the First Santa Fe Company, who had been detached and sent ahead of the main Mexican force to carry formal notices to the government and capital. Some 100 prisoners were reportedly coming by road, with escort of 200 soldiers. Following the notice is a rousing patriotic commentary: "100 Texans have dared to insult our nation and 100 Texans have been apprehended..." The Gonzalez letter was subsequently reprinted in a few other Mexican news-sheets. Streeter Texas 963.
ONE OF ONLY THREE EXTANT COPIES. THE STREETER COPY IS AT YALE; STREETER LISTS ANOTHER IN THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY.
