[ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA]. Saint Paul City Directory. For 1856-7. Saint Paul: Goodrich & Somers, 1857.

8o (185 x 116 mm). Large folding map (partially separated at gutter, few tears skilfully backed on verso), text illustrations and advertisements printed on yellow, pink, green and blue paper. (Some pale dampstaining in lower margin at beginning.) Original black roan-backed printed boards (boards a bit chipped and rubbed). Provenance: Fayette J. Irvine (contemporary ownership signature on front board and inner text leaf).

THE FIRST SAINT PAUL CITY DIRECTORY, with a contemporary provenance, most likely from a member of the family of prominent realtors and merchants who are listed within. A business directory was published for Saint Paul the preceding year by Goodrich & Somers, but this city directory more than doubles the earlier work in number of pages, adding a directory of the residents of the city, their occupations and addresses. A brief history of St. Paul is included, as are descriptions of governmental offices and officials, lists of important businesses, information regarding territorial post offices, and lists of fraternal organizations and their officers, including the Masons and the Knights Templar. Dozens of pages of advertisements printed on colored paper are included, for a variety of businesses. The fine map shows the growing downtown area in great detail. Streets are identified and the owners of undeveloped lands are named. The map is surrounded by a number of small engravings of prominent buildings and residences, including the territorial capitol, courthouse and a scene along the lower levee of the Mississippi River. Spear, AII and OCLC together locate only seven copies of this directory. AII Minnesota 175; Howes S-40; OCLC 3411744; Spear p. 333.
