8o (212 x 146 mm). Original tan printed wrappers (some minor soiling); red quarter morocco folding portfolio. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert (his sale Sotheby's New York, 28 October 1999, lot 724).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS GREAT RARITY: probably the rarest single work devoted to Indian fighting on the Plains, and one of the rarest personal accounts of the Civil War period. After the Sioux uprising in Minnesota in 1862, the Indians were effectively driven further west. Under General H.H. Sibley an expedition was organized to pursue the Indians into the Dakotas and chastise them further for the bloody events of the previous year. Sibley led his force west on June 16, 1863, and Daniels, a sergeant, details their march and skirmishes with the Indians throughout the summer until their final return to Fort Snelling on 10 September. Only eight soldiers were killed in the campaign, which was judged a great success. Daniels also includes rosters of all who participated.

Only seven copies of this book are located, of which four copies have changed hands in the last fifty years. The only other copy to appear at auction in the last 25 years was the copy of a Minnesota collector, Christie's New York, 19 December 2002, lot 169. AII Minnesota 541; Graff 1000; Howes D-56 and S-444; Minnesota Imprints 541; Sabin 80821.
