This Roman god is always represented with a head facing both ways, perhaps suggesting the need for a cautious look in all directions before action. The temple of Janus stood in the Roman Forum.

The original models of the present bust-headed columns are in the Garden of the Vetti Palace, Pompeii.

Two similar marble heads of Janus, but without the foliate column supports were sold, Sotheby's, Zurich, 25 November 1992, lots 182 and 183.
