1925 SUNBEAM 14/40 FOUR SEATER TOURER

Engine: four cylinder, overhead valve, monobloc, 2,120cc, 41bhp at 2,800; Gearbox: three speed manual; Suspension: front, semi-elliptic leaf-spring, rear cantilever springs. Brakes: four wheel drum. Right hand drive.
Sunbeam's base four-cylinder model, initially in the post-war years the famous 3 litre 16, gave way in 1922 to a smaller, overhead valve 2 litre. Initially sold as a Fourteen, it was quickly updated with front wheel brakes and sold as the 14/40 model from 1924, at which time they also moved from artillery to wire wheels.
The Sharpe Family Collection Sunbeam was sold new to the Lloyds family of Areley Hall. It was registered new on 14th August 1925 with Worcestershire County Council, according to its 1945 continuation log book. This also provides dates of 5th January 1938 and 27th September 1945 which are annotated in the same script and so seem to state that the car had survived its war-years with the same owner, that gentleman being A.J. Garfield of Stourport on Severn. It changed hands shortly after this to a William Wilcox, who sold it to his next door neighbour Stanley Langstone 12 years later. By October 1957, Mr Langstone had moved and taken his Sunbeam with him to Kelvedon, Colchester. Last taxed in 1958, it seems likely that this was an early acquisition for the Sharpes.
The Sunbeam has been laid up in farm barn storage for the majority of the ensuing years until discovered by Christie's earlier this year. Since that discovery, the car has been worked on at the garage and despite its appearance in the catalogue photographs the car's general condition has improved vastly. This work has included careful polishing of the radiator, such that the nickel now beams and the interior is tidy and presentable, it certainly gives some perspective as to the possibility of preserving aspects of these barn discovery cars, rather than a need for entire restoration and as such the car now has a charming aged appearance. We still recommend that it be thoroughly checked over mechanically.
With the car are a buff log book and V5 document, while it is also noted that one of the dashboard instruments, a clock, is missing.
