In the earliest days of the motor industry Panhard-Levassor were the leading light, their pioneering Système Panhard provided the first car in concept to be produced with a direct link in its design to the product we know today. But as with many car manufacturers their fortunes fluctuated more often than not because the genius that created a particularly successful design was not too inclined to produce an entirely different model to eclipse it, or indeed occasionally evolved too quickly. Thus Panhard-Levassor as they entered the 1920s was no longer the pinnacle of its industry, but it did produce a whole range of products from 2 litre four cylinder cars to a 6.3 litre straight eight, most having sleeve valve engines.

The cars still retain some of the more charismatic and appealing details from their forebears, such as the vee-d radiator and artillery style wheels. The X39 we offer for sale is a perfect example of the model and carries the unusual saloon coachwork style with which many were bodied, being a wood top half with the lower part panelled in metal.

The car has been farm barn stored in less than ideal conditions for many years until its discovery earlier this year. As a result its condition is poor, with a lot of surface corrosion to the bodywork, but nevertheless seemingly complete from side and headlights to rear luggage rack. The interior has survived relatively well, and although showing some aging appears substantially complete, from original door trims and panelling, to instrumentation and even original blinds, with the sole exception of a dashboard clock which is missing.

A wheel spanner was also found and goes with the car.
