1961 BENTLEY S2 STANDARD STEEL SALOON
Registration No. RHA 92
Chassis No. B201 DV
Engine No. 100 DB
Body No. BT1531
Two tone metallic grey over blue with grey leather interior.
Engine: V8, overhead valves operated by pushrod, twin SU carburettors, 6,230cc; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front independent coil, rear,semi-elliptic; Brakes: drums all round with hydraulic operation to the front and mechanical servo assistance to the rear. Right hand drive.
At the 1959 London Motor Show, Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motors introduced their first all alloy V8 engine in both the Bentley S2 and its equivalent, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. This 6.2 litre engine, with hydraulic tappets operating overhead valves, produced an approximate 200bhp at 4,500rpm. A large quantity of alloy was used in the engine construction, enabling a similar weight to be obtained to its 4.8 litre six cylinder predecessor. The result was a larger, more powerful engine providing an extremely smooth power curve and top speed well in excess of 110mph. The American Hydramatic automatic transmission and power steering completed the modernisation, making the S2 a much more comfortable car to drive than the S1. Other changes from the earlier series included a smaller steering wheel, improvements in the braking system and variations in the instrument panel. However, the outstanding appeal of the S2 is its V8 engine and smooth performance.
B201 DV was retailed through H.R. Owen Ltd of London, and was delivered new forty-four years ago almost to the day on 27th June 1961. Finished in Shell grey over Steel blue livery with a Blue interior, as noted on its original factory record which accompanies the car, they also note that it was equipped with electric windows and a radio. The original owner was W.W.S. Robertson of Oakley House, Bedfordshire, who registered it as '812 CXF'’, it later gaining the numberplate it wears today.
According to the tax disc it wears, 'RHA 92'’ was last valid on the road until October 1974, at which time it was consigned to long term storage. Today, its condition is fair, its paintwork which has been resprayed at some time during its life, has faded, but the interior is generally tidy. The mileage reading of 10,483 has not been substantiated and unfortunately there is no paperwork with the car.
The Bentley is offered in need of full re-commissioning and may well need attention to the bodywork.
