1955 STANDARD VANGUARD III FOUR-DOOR SALOON
Registration No. 852 GTW
Chassis No. V311340 DL
Engine No. V312957 E
Black with two-tone brown interior.
Engine: four cylinders in line, overhead valves, 2,088cc, 68bhp at 4,200rpm; Gearbox: three-speed manual with synchromesh on all three gears, overdrive; Suspension: front, independent wishbones with coil springs, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: Lockheed hydraulic drums all round. Right hand drive.
The third incarnation of Standard's popular Vanguard emerged in 1955. With styling proposed by New Yorker Tucker Madawick and finalised by Standard's chief stylist Walter Belgrove, the principle difference between the Phase III and its predecessors was the use of unitary construction. The chassis-less body was lighter, enabling better performance and economy, while the engine could be situated further forwards thus allowing a more spacious interior. It used the company's tried-and-tested 2,088cc wet liner four-cylinder engine coupled to three-speed synchromesh gearbox with higher ratios than previously. The result was a comfortable and spacious saloon capable of 85 mph, of which nearly 37,200 were produced before production ceased in 1958.
This example still wears its original black paintwork which is shows some surface rust markings but is otherwise in good condition. It also retains its original two-tone brown vinyl interior which is also in good condition, though it does show a little wear to the off-side door trims. The odometer reads 73,033 miles, and the car is sold without documentation.
