1938 FORD Y TYPE TUDOR SALOON
Registration No. FVW 555
Chassis No. Y213897
Engine No. R420503B
Black with red interior
Engine: four cylinder, side valve, monobloc, 933cc; Gearbox: three speed manual with synchromesh, centre change; Suspension: front and rear, independent by transverse leaf springs; Brakes: Girling four wheel drum. Right hand drive.
The origins of the Y type are recorded elsewhere in the catalogue, but suffice to say it was an incredible success and by 1938 had earned itself a full revision. The new generation of ‘Y’s such as this car, featured updated styling with a new radiator grille and more enclosed wing treatment. They also benefited from having a box section chassis, rod-operated Girling brakes an ‘umbrella’ handle handbrake, steel spoke wheels and internal luggage accommodation. Sales were continually strong with 65,098 Tudor saloons being produced in two years.
This Model Y was originally registered locally with Essex County Council on 7th January 1938 and may well have remained in this area all of its life. Its continuation log book is also stamped in Essex and confirms that the car was owned by Robert McKett of Chelmsford from 14th January 1955. Subsequent road tax stamps place the car in Maldon to the last day of 1967 after which it is believed the car was purchased by the Sharpe family.
The Y Type was the first British car for which a factory exchange engine service was available this car being evidence of such a change, as noted in its buff log book, which records the current engine as having been fitted on 29th September 1949.
This Y type has been in storage for many years and its condition reflects this. There is extensive surface corrosion to the bodywork and the interior shows quite a lot of wear with some tears to the front seat covers. It is however generally complete and even retains some of the original tools fitted to the bulkhead.
Sporting an AA badge on its radiator grille and additional driving light, it is offered for sale in need of restoration and comes with buff log book and V5 registration document.
