1937 MORRIS 8HP SALOON
Registration No. EGW 342
Chassis No. S2/E170616
Engine No. 167011
Black with fawn fabric interior
Engine: four cylinders, side valve, single SU carburettor, 918cc, 23.5bhp at 4,000rpm; Gearbox: manual three speed, synchromesh on 2nd and top; Suspension: beam front axle, live rear axle, half elliptic leaf springs all round; Brakes: four-wheel hydraulically operated drum. Right hand drive.
Morris's best seller for several years was the Eight, introduced in September 1934 and destined for a 14 year production run interrupted only by World War II. The first hundred-thousand found buyers in less than two years and the quarter millionth was delivered in the latter part of 1938. They were priced at £132.50 on the home market.
By the time this Morris was made, the successful model was into its third full production guise, the Series II. With this came pressed steel "Easiclean" wheels, the option of a painted radiator shell and by now the bodywork despite its swage moulding that ran across from the radiator and then tapered down to the back of the car was supplied in single colour schemes. Ostensibly the changes were to keep the model up to date with the other Series III cars in the Morris range, and though modest did not hamper sales which were a respectable 54,000 units.
This Eight was first registered with London County Council on the 1st October 1937, as denoted on its V5 document, however subsequent history is not recorded and it is not known when the car would have been acquired by the Sharpe Family. What we can be certain of from the location in which the car was found, is that as with many comparable cars of this period it had been laid up and not on the road for many years.
