Lawrie Bond is a name synonymous with the successful design of small and highly economical cars, mainly of the three-wheeled variety. After a brief spell in aeronautical engineering he turned his attentions toward personal transport, and, after establishing a manufacturing partnership with Sharp's Commercials of Preston, he broached the already-growing 'microcar' market with 1949's Minicar. These early vehicles were basic to an extreme; constructed of a load-bearing aluminium body shell (there was no chassis) and furnished with a Perspex windscreen, they had no front brake and no rear suspension. The latter arrived on the Mk B, and 1952's Mk C brought with it not only a front brake but also a passenger door and front wings. The wings were more than just an aesthetic accessory; they allowed the revised front wheel set-up, with its forward mounted Villiers engine, to turn through 180 degrees, and endowing the Minicar with the most crowd-pleasing turning circle possible. The Minicar, already popular, gained new appeal, and by 1955 Sharp's were turning out nearly 300 cars a month.
The example offered here has seen better days, and presents itself as the perfect basis for a rewarding restoration project. There is a repair to the offside front wing and the front lights are missing. The paintwork is in poor condition, but the body seems to be relatively free from corrosion. The brown interior is original and, while untidy, is restorable, but the brown hood has survived in good condition. The car is sold without documentation.
